What Will Justin Trudeau's Carbon Tax Cost Canadians?

What Will Justin Trudeau's Carbon Tax Cost Canadians?

In an article posted on the Financial Post yesterday, a report to the Senate Standing Committee on Energy is referenced, where University of Calgary economics professor Jennifer Winter revealed the bottom line of the Trudeau Carbon Price.

Provinces that will be hit the hardest are Alberta, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. Each household within the provinces will be taxed more than $1,000 of carbon tax per a year. The provinces with the lowest bills will be British Columbia, Quebec and Manitoba. Households will be taxed around $650.

As stated in the article, these are not the "painless" costs the country was promised. In addition, many experts agree that carbon prices need to continue to increase to effectively lower emissions.

The Effects of Lighting on Workplace Productivity

The Effects of Lighting on Workplace Productivity

In a study completed by Philips Lighting they found that quality of lighting in the workplace had a significant effect on employee productivity, specifically on circadian rhythm.

Why is that important to workplace productivity?

Circadian rhythms have been shown to influence sleep-wake cycles, hormone release, eating habits and digestion, stimulation, relaxation, body temperature, and other important bodily functions. How can you ensure your current lighting system is designed for optimal employee performance?

Likewise, proper lighting has been found to decrease depression, as well as improve employees' moods, energy levels, alertness and productivity.

The article Flick of a Switch: How Lighting Affects Productivity and Mood by Molly Greenberg on Business.com, Greenberg references a study completed by the American Society of Interior Design that discovered that 68% of employees complained about the lighting in their offices.

Although these studies focus on employee productivity, it's important to know that proper lighting can also affect your customers.  RES Canada completed a lighting retrofit for The Burlington Golf & Country Club that has produced substantial cost savings, but also elevated the atmosphere in a prestigious club. Similarly, a restaurant with improved lighting can increase savings and positively influence the mood of staff and customers.

South Bruce Peninsula LED Lighting Retrofit

South Bruce Peninsula Estimated to Save $67,000 Annually by Switching to LED Lighting for Street Lights

At a South Bruce Peninsula council meeting on May 1st, Manager of Financial Services, Karmen Krueger, announced that staff are looking to have an audit of their lighting. This would provide them with an inventory of what lighting needs the municipality has in order to move forward with their plan to convert street lights to LED lighting.

The municipality has dedicated some time to converting lights, however, the plan is to get all lights converted to LED at the same time.

Krueger states in a report to council that the largest financial benefit is an expected annual cost savings of approximately $67,000. The initial investment of $171,000 has a payback period of around two and a half years.

The audit to understand the lighting inventory the municipality currently has, and needs is much like the audits RES provides. A lighting expert will come to your facility and determine where you have opportunity to reduce your lighting consumption by switching to LED lighting. Learn more about our process here.

Additionally, RES also offers exterior lighting retrofits for areas such as parking lots and auto dealership lots.
